Priests Treasure (M is the author, RL is his friend, Rev B is vicar of Church of England)
A letter came to M, RL and their friend from a highly educated vicar of the Church of England, by the way of a priest in a village in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The letter talked about the treasure not being gold or precious stones but positive evidence Jesus was alive in A.D. 45. Also documents concerning Jesus and the basis of Christianity which they felt were too wild and put them on file as they were more interested with the thought of Jesus being married and possibly having a child. They decide to travel to England and talk to the priest in the village.
In the village, Rev. B in his daily talks with Canon A.L. is told an extraordinary story.
Canon A.L. was asked to travel to Paris, to advise on the translation of a/or some special document(s) since the scholars could not translate the text. The Canon was not sure where they (documents) originally came from but believed they had been in southern France, in the 12-13th centuries and then held in Switzerland until wars in the 14th century when they were taken to France. Rev. B said that Canon A.L. after seeing the documents came to the conclusion that there was nothing in the Gospels that one could be certain about.
Canon L, was a modernist and wanted to revise the dogmatic assertions or control of the church. Others were beginning to question as well, for example a Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral was asked to write on the life of Jesus, which he declined saying there was not enough solid evidence.
During the 19th century, the Vatican became increasing anachronistic and the pope ruled like a potentate. Torture was regularly practiced by minions of the Inquisition and people were thrown into secret jails.
