Just want to share a neat thing the Guidance Office did for us teachers today.  In every mailbox was a prescription bottle (donated by our business partner, Wal-Mart).  The bottle was filled with M&M's.  The prescription read Teacher medicine.  Take these special vitamins as follows red for stress reduction green if you feel frustrated orange if you need a quick boost of energy blue if you need a shot of happiness brown for anytime you feel the urge for chocolate and yellow to calm the nerves! It made my day!

Have kids do a writing assignment of who they could test M&Ms--or crazy uses for M&Ms other than eating.  Example!

Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species.  To this end, I hold M&M duels.

Taking 2 candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters.  That is the "loser" and I eat the inferior one immediately.  The winner gets to go another round.

I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior.  I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theater of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world. Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshaped, or pointer, or flatter than the rest.  Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength.  In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment.

When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd.  Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, NJ.

This week they wrote back to me, and sent a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms.  I consider this "grant money."  I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament.  From a field of hundreds, we will discover the True Champion. There can only be one.

I love the ideas you are sharing about making the "books" like the Hershey's Kiss and the Sundaes...   I take it the booklets are in the shape of the Kiss and the Sundae and the writings inside are shaped the same way.   The Kiss would be great for Memories of our Chocolate   Day...or even a Snickers Wrapper would be great.

I've done a unit on chocolate - created in graduate school. It is extremely interesting topic. I didn't really focus on economics, but it is a very interesting example of supply and demand. In the early days, when explorers
brought back the first chocolate it was a great delicacy that only the very rich could afford. You could bring in the idea of barter, too. Most of these things were traded, not bought with "money" or gold. You know the
natives got some things like beads, metal knifes and so forth, the ship was loaded up with cocoa beans, next port the traded trinkets and some of the cocoa beans for some thing else and so on. When they got back to England or France or wherever they had a ship hold full of all kinds of treasures and rarities.

Have kids modify or change this list.

THE RULES OF CHOCOLATE

~ If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating it too slowly.

~ Chocolate covered raisins, cherries, orange slices & strawberries all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want.

~ The problem How to get 2 pounds of chocolate home from the store in hot car. The solution: Eat it in the parking lot.

~ Diet tip Eat a chocolate bar before each meal. It'll take the edge off your appetite and you'll eat less.

~ A nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Isn't that handy?

~ If you can't eat all your chocolate, it will keep in the freezer.

~ But if you can't eat all your chocolate, what's wrong with you?

~ If calories are an issue, store your chocolate on top of the fridge. Calories are afraid of heights, and they will jump out of the chocolate to protect themselves.

~ If I eat equal amounts of dark chocolate and white chocolate, is that a balanced diet? Don't they actually counteract each other?

~ Money talks. Chocolate sings.

~ Chocolate has many preservatives. Preservatives make you look younger.

~ Q. Why is there no such organization as Chocoholics Anonymous?
A. Because no one wants to quit.

~ If not for chocolate, there would be no need for control top pantyhose.
An entire garment industry would be devastated.

~ Put "eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today.
That way, at least you'll get one thing done.

Mother's Chocolate Valentine

by Jack Prelutsky

I bought a box of chocolate hearts,
a present for my mother,
they looked so good I tasted one,
and then I tried another.

They both were so delicious
that I ate another four,
and then another couple,
and then half a dozen more.

I couldn't seem to stop myself,
I nibbled on and on,
before I knew what happened
all the chocolate hearts were gone.

I felt a little guilty,
I was stuffed down to my socks,
I ate my mother's valentine.....
I hope she likes the box.

CHOCO

CHOCO hot - a tasty drink
CHOCO cookies, best I think
CHOCO frozen, in a cup
CHOCO melting - eat it up!
CHOCO milk for CHOCO shakes,
CHOCO icing covers cakes.
CHOCO kisses are a treat-
CHOCO's what I love to eat.

A Brand New Me!
If what you eat is what you are,
I'd be a great big candy bar.

If I eat m&ms a lot
I'd be a kid with colored spots.

With gooey,chewy stuff inside
And candy coating for my hide.

IF what I eat is what you see,
Here's looking at a brand new me!

Confection Perfection
   ice cream cone
    sweet, cold
licking, melting, dripping
It tastes like Heaven.
    CHOCOLATE!

U-Um Good
Something chocolate is my wish,
Any choco-licious dish.
Might be cookies from a jar
Or a nutty candy bar.
Maybe pie or cake or fudge,
Try them all- you be the judge.
Chocolate really can't be beat
Silky,brown, and oh so sweet!

Taste Test
All the things my mother makes:
Candies, cookies, birthday cakes,
Always pass my flavor test
If they're chocolate... That's the best!

Lip Smackin Good
They're lip smackin' good
It's hard to believe,
These taste-tempting treats
All started as seeds.

If there was a chance,
I'd try really hard,
To grow a cacao tree
In my front yard.

Then all of my friends
Would think I'm a star,
And come to my house
For free candy bars.

Recipe  Chocolate Spiders
Yield 6 servings
12 oz Package semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 c  Peanuts
3 1/2 c  Chow mein noodles
Melt chips in double-boiler, remove from heat, stir in peanuts and noodles.
Drop on waxed paper. Keep in the refrigerator...way in the back so the kids won't find them and you can sneak bites after they have gone to bed.

Back in September, we did a project to celebrate Chocolate Day.  In groups of 2 - 4 the students made up their own chocolate bar with the things they like best (ex. chocolate, carmel, krispies).  They then designed their own wrapper for it.  I have several of the milky pens and black paper so many of them used those to design their wrappers.  Each group then made a poster to advertise their chocolate bar and wrote a commercial for it which we videotaped.  One of the best was the TKT (Totally Kool Temptations) bar (named after Tonisha, Kisha, and Taquoisha).  They designed a really nice wrapper and then, for their commerical, rewrote some of the words from the song My Girl to represent their love of chocolate.  The kids really came up
with great ideas.
