Hi everyone,
If you haven't discovered this website yet, you might want to check it out. It is a Middle School Guide for New Teachers, but it is loaded with fantastic information and links that would be helpful to any middle school teacher. It has sections for help for new teachers, discipline and classroom management and the first days of school. It also has a link where you can sign up to receive a weekly middle grades newsletter (free). I shared this with my middle school student teachers and they found it extremely helpful!

There is also a listserv for MiddleWeb that you can subscribe to if you're interested.

MiddleWeb has recently joined forces with NMSA (National Middle School Association). Those of us who were already members get to stay on that listserv free for one year, but then we will have to join NMSA to continue. It is very helpful and professional in tone. They (many of the original MiddleWebbers)
have become so close that they have had their own summer meetings! Many of the long-time MiddleWebbers took flight from Middle L.

There are some great listservs for Middle Grades on the MiddleWeb site. If the links aren't clickable in this message you can go to this URL to get the information. This is a different list than the Middle-L listserv.

Middle Grades Listserv Conversations
For more than six years, MiddleWeb sponsored several ongoing conversations among middle grades educators and other folks interested in the education of young adolescents. After nurturing these chat groups into full-fledged virtual professional communities, we've found them new homes!
[LITERACYWORKSHOP] — This MiddleWeb spin-off group offers an in-depth exploration of Writing and Reading Workshop and issues related to struggling adolescent readers. Formerly the MiddleWeb "MWProjects" listserv, Literacy Workshop now has its own website and sign-up area. Find out more about this lively listserv, which targets teachers in grades 4-8, at the Literacy Workshop website.
[MIDDLETALK] — This general discussion of "all things middle school" began as a MiddleWeb chat group in 1999 and blossomed into a truly vibrant online professional community of more than 700 members. In March 2006, the MiddleWeb listserv was adopted by the National Middle School Association, with a new name – MIDDLETALK. Individuals interested in participating in the daily MiddleTalk discussions must first join NMSA. If you're looking for professional friends eager to chat about teaching and learning in the middle grades, join NMSA today! Be sure to ask about MiddleTalk participation when you call to join.
MIDDLE-L Discussion List
MIDDLE-L is a discussion list for anybody interested in middle school education. Operated by the Early Childhood and Parenting (ECAP) Collaborative at the University of Illinois, MIDDLE-L is the place where parents, teachers, representatives of professional associations and government agencies, faculty and researchers, students and teachers, librarians, and anyone else interested in middle school education come together to share ideas, resources, problems, and solutions.
MIDDLE-L is hosted by the Early Childhood and Parenting
(ECAP) Collaborative at the University of Illinois.

Linda's Links to Literature (home page). A subscription is $24.95 per year but her resources are incredible! It is truly the best one-stop shopping you can do if you teach using literature trade books.

Gifted and Talented
One of the biggest listservs for gifted is TAG-L. I've been on it a couple of times, but they have some flame war problems. I guess there are several lists affiliated with them.

There are so many wonderful resources for GT. The thing is, many people are so worried about getting kids to pass state tests that the high end kids are ignored. Many great methods for GT kids benefit ALL kids.
I have been to state and national conferences for gifted; all very worthwhile. Some of my favorite presenters on GT are Roger Taylor,

Carolyn Coil (differentiated instruction)

and James Curry and John Samara. http://www.curriculumproject.com/
(whose things go WAY beyond just GT)
Let me know if you would like any more info. I taught Gt science for
several years.

Mosaic of Thought Teachers share great thinking, questions, strategies and resources on the list. They have an outstanding "tools" page with lots of downloadable materials and many of them come from Ellin. You can also subscribe to the Mosaic Email Group on this site.

RealWritingTeachers (another fantastic listserv for literacy/writing teachers). It's a very active list so you should sign up for the digest to keep from getting overwhelmed with emails. They have some wonderful book discussions and really focus on practical strategies for use in the classroom.
Description
The use of the Real Writer's Notebook in the classroom writing workshop was introduced several years ago by Ralph Fletcher and Lucy Calkins. Daily fine tunings to fit the many different requirements of state standards, district standards, and the needs of individual students have resulted in many different approaches to using real writing notebooks. This group of teachers and writers is all about sharing insights, strategies, models for writing notebooks, do's and don'ts, latest resources available, Six Traits, Step Up to Writing, Reading Instruction, and any tips that come to mind. Literacy topics in general are also discussed! We recognize the importance of helping children see the whole literacy cycle. We teach them to read like a writer and write for the reader!
Ralph Fletcher, Lucy Calkins, Barry Lane, Georgia Heard, Katie Wood Ray, Ruth Culham, Stephanie Harvey, Ellin Keene, Harvey Daniels, Joanne Hindley, Regie Routman... let's chat about all of their writing/literacy instruction expertise! Join us today!
